SIXTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
July 18, 2010

The Three Visitors
The apparition at Mamre
“The Lord appeared to Abraham near the great trees of Mamre while he was sitting at the entrance to his tent in the heat of the day. Abraham looked up and saw three men standing nearby. When he saw them, he hurried from the entrance of his tent to meet them and bowed low to the ground.
…Then his guest said, ‘I shall visit you again next year without fail, and your wife will then have a son.”
(Genesis 18: 1-2, 10)
In its definitive form this “Yahwistic” narrative recounts an apparition of Yahweh accompanied by two “men” who, according to 19:1, are angels.
In these three, to whom Abraham addressed a single act of homage, many of the Father saw a foreshadowing of the doctrine of the Trinity, a doctrine that was revealed only in the New Testament.
Where in your life is God telling you, “It’s never too late”? Or, “no need to rush around”?
Abraham, the just and upright man, graciously host three visitors. And you welcome the estrangers?
“Lord, who may dwell in your sanctuary”?
“Who may live on your holy mountain”?
(Psalm 15:1)
Where would your dream house be? What feature would have to be present?

Paul’s labors in the service of the pagans
“It makes me happy to suffer for you…I became the servant of the Church when God made me responsible for delivering God’s message to you, the message which was a mystery hidden for generations and centuries and had now been revealed to his saints… The mystery is Christ among you, your hope of glory.”
(Colossians 1: 24-26, 27)
How has finding Christ been like uncovering buried treasure for you?
Be open to receive the message and person of Jesus, and being receptive to the “mystery of Christ” as he comes to us through one another.

At the Home of Martha and Mary
“”Jesus came to a village where a woman named Martha opened her home to him. She had a sister called Mary, who sat at the Lord’s feel listening to what he said.”
(Luke 10: 38-39)
How do these two sisters differ? Why is Mary’s choice better? What is Jesus point?
In your opinion, what are the good points and the blind spots of both Mary and Martha?
Who are you most like?

“As for the part in the rich soil, this is people with a noble and generous heart who heard the word and takes it to themselves and yields a harvest through their perseverance.”

July 4, 2010

Judgment and Hope
“Rejoice with Jerusalem and be glad for her, all you who love her; all you who mourn over her.”
(Isaiah 66: 10)
What is one of the most beautiful churches or cathedrals you have seen? What emotions did it evoke as you walked in? As you joined in the worship service?
Did you ever do something to please your parents or teachers which invoked their displeasure instead? Tell about it. How did you feel?

Corporate act of thanksgiving
“Acclaim God, all the earth, play music to the glory of his name; glorify him with your praises… all the earth bows down to you… Come and see what marvels God has done… Come and listen… Blessed be God who neither ignored my prayer nor deprived me of his love.”
(Psalm 66: 1, 4, 5, 16, and 20)

Who does the psalmist call to worship (‘all the earth’)? Why? What types of things can mankind ‘come and see’?
All the earth does not bow to God. What is the point of saying so? What is your vision of a world at peace with God?
What sacrifices should you make this week for the Lord?

A New Creation
“As for me, the only thing I can boast about is the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ…what matters if for him to become an altogether new creature. Peace and mercy to all who follow this rule…”
(Galatians 6:14, 15, 16)
In what ways do people today tamper with the gospel of the cross to make it less “offensive” to others? Have you been tempted to do so? How?
How has coming to Christ changed your attitudes toward the common values and ideas of the world?

The mission of the seventy-two disciples
“… The Lord appointed seventy-two others and sent them two by two ahead of him… Go! I am sending you out like lambs among wolves. Do not take a purse or bag or sandals…”
(Luke 10: 3)
Why does he send the disciples out two-by-two? Why does he send them ahead of him?
How do you feel about the harvest where you live? Are people ripe for the gospel? What would it take for you to be more involved in the harvest?
When have you feel like a lamb among wolves? What did you learn from that experience?

“Let the peace of CHRIST control your hearts; let the word of CHRIST dwell in you richly.” Alleluia!

THIRTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
June 27, 2010

The Call of Elisha
“…Elisha was plowing with twelve yoke of oxen and he himself was driving the twelfth pair. Elijah went up to him and threw his cloak around him. Elisha then left his oxen and ran after Elijah…”
(1 King 19:19-20)
What’s the point of the cloak-throw (v.19)?
Has God ever asked you “What are you doing here”? What is your answer?

Yahweh, my heritage
            “Lord, my heritage, my cup, you, and you only, hold my lot secure; I bless Lord, who is my counselor, and in the night my inmost self instructs me; you will reveal the path of life to me, give me unbounded joy in your presence, and at your right hand everlasting pleasures.”
(Psalm 16: 2, 5, 7, 11)
It is the Lord alone who is to hold fast our lot.

Christian liberty
“When Christ freed us, he meant us to remain free. Stand firm, therefore, and do not submit again to the yoke of slavery…
My brothers and sisters, you were called, as you know, to liberty; but be careful, or this liberty will provide an opening for self-indulgence. Serve one another, rather, in works of love…”
(Galatians 5: 1, 13)
Paul distinguishes between true freedom and license.

The Cost of Following Jesus
“Jesus replied, ‘Foxes have holes and birds of the air have nests, but the Son of Man has no place to lay his head.’
Jesus replied, ‘No one who puts his hand to the plough and looks back is fit for service in the kingdom of God.”
(Luke 9: 58, 62)
If Jesus were to say to you “Follow me-today,” and you were to use one of your favorite excuses for putting things off, what would happen?
Jesus insists that those who follow him must abandon all material or psychological securities, walking ever forward without looking back.

Blessed Junipero Serra July 1
1713 – 1784
Father Serra was born in Spain and chose the name of one of the companions of St. Francis Junipero, when he entered the Franciscan Order. He was a distinguished preacher and scholar, but, inspired by the mission work of St. Francis Solanus in South America, he longed to be a missionary instead. In 1749, he traveled to Mexico and worked in the Baja Peninsula for 18 years. Then, when the Spaniards took over Upper California in 1767, Father Serra accompanied the Spanish forces to San Diego, and established his first mission. He founded nine missions up and down the length of California before he died, and 12 more were founded after his death. Father Serra’s zeal for the faith “brought the gospel of Christ to the people of Mexico and California and firmly established the Church among them.”
May we, too, always be eager to share the gift of faith with those who have not yet heard the Gospel.

THE MOST HOLY TRINITY

Blessed be GOD the FATHER and his only-begotten SON and the HOLY SPIRIT: for he has show that he loves us!

Wisdom as creator.  Wisdom’s Call.
“The Lord possessed me at the beginning of his work, before his deeds of old; I was appointed from eternity, from the beginning, before the world began… I was filled with delight day after day, rejoicing always in his presence, rejoicing in his whole world and delighting in the human race.”
(Proverbs 8: 22-23, 30-31)
If “Christ” could be substituted for “Wisdom” in this passage, how would that affect your view or application of its main points?
For example, what would “finds life” mean?
How can you find “Wisdom” or “life” without Christ?
How is your personal search for Wisdom progressing?
Would wisdom make your list of “Ten Most Precious Things in the World”?
Why? Solomon says wisdom is “more precious than rubies”: Are jewelry, money, or possessions on your “Top Ten’ list?

“O Lord, our Lord, how majestic is your name in all the earth!”
(Psalm 8:1)
Can we do anything we want to God’s creation?  What are our limits? Responsibilities?

Faith guarantees salvation. Peace and Joy
“Therefore, since we have been justified through faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have faith, grace, rejoice, and hope of the glory of God…we also rejoice in our sufferings…”

What three words best describe your life before you were a Christian? How about now? Why the change?

The Work of the Holy Spirit
“I have much more to say to you, more than you can now bear. But when he, the Spirit of truth, comes, he will guide you into all truth.”

Of the various roles of the Holy Spirit described here, which one have you come to appreciate recently? How so?

PENTECOST SUNDAY

The Holy Spirit Comes at Pentecost
“When Pentecost day came round they  had all met in one room, when suddenly they heard what sounded like a powerful wind from heaven, the noise of which filled the entire house in which they were sitting; and something appeared to them that seemed like tongues of fire; these separated and came to rest on the head of each of them. They were all filled with the Holy Spirit…”
(Acts 2: 1-4)
Why did God wait until Pentecost (a celebrative harvest festival and time of Giving of the Law. Dt 16:9-10) to give the Holy Spirit?
If you had been there, what would you have seen, heard, and felt? Would you respond more like those in verse 12 or 13; “Amazed and perplexed, they asked one another, ‘What does this mean?’ …they have too much wine.”

“LORD, SEND OUT YOUR SPIRIT, AND RENEW THE FACE ON THE EARTH.”

Spiritual gifts (charismata); the variety and the unity of gifts; the analogy of the body
“No one can say, ‘Jesus is Lord’ unless he is under the influence of the Holy Spirit.”
(1 Corinthians 12: 3b)
What was the best gift you ever received or gave? What was the occasion?
How many different kinds of service or work situation have you had since you finished school?

Appearance to the disciples
“Jesus came and stood among them… he breathed on them and said: ‘Receive the Holy Spirit. For those whose sins you forgive, they are forgiven; for those sins you retain, they are retained.”
(John 20: 22 -23)
The breath of Jesus is a symbol of the Spirit (‘breath’ in Hebrew); he sends forth the Spirit who will make all things anew; to strengthen them to go forth in the name of the Lord; ‘to renew the face of the earth.”

STEWARDSHIP

How great are God’s signs, how mighty his wonders!
The Holy Spirit, the fire of God’s love, descends upon the Church, the Body of Christ, to raise us to everlasting life in Christ, and thus brings to completion the work of creation and of the incarnation of God’s Word. In this mystery of the Church’s beginning lies our promised end.

The souls of the just are in God’s hands.
Christ, the Good Shepherd, died for us while we were still sinners.
He is the resurrection and the life.

THE ASCENSION
OF THE LORD
May 16, 2010

Jesus Taken Up Into Heaven
“In my earlier work, Theophilus, I dealt with everything Jesus had done and taught from the beginning until the day He gave His instructions to the apostles He has chosen through the Holy Spirit, and taken up to heaven… ”
(Acts 1: 1-2)
Luke shows how the ministry of the Lord is continued by his apostles through the power of the Holy Spirit.
Theophilus this may be a historical person or he may represent any devoted reader - the name means “beloved of God.”
The ascension is a great fest of hope! The ascension makes us feel like human beings again! How do we respond to such Good News?

“Clap your hands, all you nations; shout to God with cries of joy. How awesome is the Lord Most High, the great King over all the earth!
(Psalm 47: 1-2)
Have you ever seen a famous person in the flesh? Did he or she seem different than you imagined? How often do you clap your hands or shout for joy in church?
In what way is God King of all the earth when so many people ignore and disobey him?
Judaism does not teach that all should become Jews. Do you think God wants everyone to become a Christian? Even Jews?
Do you enjoy loud singing, clapping and praise? How often do your parish services give you a sense of awe?

The triumph and the supremacy of Christ
“May the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, give you a spirit of wisdom and perception of what is revealed, to bring you to full knowledge of Him. May he enlighten the eyes of your mind so that you can see what hope his call holds for you…”
(Ephesians 1:17-18)
 Saint Paul prays that we may come to a deep knowledge of God and of what God has done for us in Christ.
As members of the Church, we experience the power that God displayed in raising Christ from the dead.

The Ascension
“Then Jesus took them out as far as the outskirts of Bethany, and lifting up his hands be blessed them. Now as he blessed them, he withdrew from them and was carried up to heaven.”
(Luke 21: 50-51)
Jesus commissions his disciples to baptize in his name, reminding them that he is always present through his Spirit. Jesus ascended to his Father amid cries of gladness, we are to be his witnesses, mindful of the great hope to which we are called.

The Council’s Letter to Gentile Believers
“Some men came down from Judea to Antioch and were teaching the brothers: ‘Unless you are circumcised, according to the custom taught by Moses, you cannot be saved.’
Then the apostles and elders… ‘It has been decided by the Holy Spirit and by ourselves not to saddle you with any burden beyond these essentials…”

2010 Catholic Charities Appeal

The mission is disrupted
“Paul and Barnabas having preached the Good News in that town and made a considerable number of disciples… They put fresh heart into the disciples, encouraging them to persevere in the faith. We all have to experience many hardships’ they said before we enter the kingdom of God.”
(Acts 14: 21 – 22)
Seeing Paul and Barnabas’ courage, faith, and endurance, how are you challenged to serve the Lord more completely?
What was one of the biggest misunderstandings about Christianity you had to overcome before you could believe?

Hymn of praise to Lord the king
“I sing your praises, God my King, I bless your name for ever and ever, blessing you day after day, and praising your name for ever and ever.”
(Psalm 145: 1)
What kind of ruler is God to you: (a) benevolent king? (b) Harsh dictator? (c) Ceremonial monarch? (d) Democratic leader? (e) Prime minister? What has influenced your picture of God? Does it need adjusting?   

The heavenly Jerusalem
“Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth; the first heaven and the first earth had disappeared now, and there was no longer any sea. I saw the holy city, and the new Jerusalem, coming down from God out of heaven…”
(Revelation 21: 1-2)
Where is one of the most beautiful places you have ever been? What impressed you about that place?
How do you think your city would be different if God were the mayor?

The Last Supper
“My little children, I shall not be with you much longer. I give you a new commandment; love one another; just as I have loved you, you also must love one another.”
(John 13: 33. 34)
If faith is scarce, it is because there is too much selfishness in the world, too much egoism. Faith, in order to the authentic, has to be generous and giving.

Israel’s Sin and the Servant’s Obedience
“I did not hide my face from mocking and spitting…Therefore have I set my face like flint, and know I will not be put to shame.”
(Isaiah 50: 6-7)
Have you ever been verbally or physically abused because of your faith?
How did you respond?
What did your relationship to God feel like at that time?

“My God, my God, why have you forsaken me? Why are you so far from saving me, so far from the words of my groaning?”
(Psalm 22: 1)
When you are stricken with grief, feeling abandoned even by God, how do you express yourself: Disbelief? Tears? Anger? Woe is me? Wanting to crawl back into the womb? Thinking about your death? Bargaining with God/ Faith in spite of a bleak outlook?
At such times, does it help to know that Jesus experienced despair and felt the same way?

Imitating Christ’s Humility
“Who, being in every nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be grasped, but made himself nothing… he humbled himself and became obedient to death- even death on a cross!
(Philippians 2: 6, 8)
Jesus, humbling himself out of love for us, did not shield his face from buffets and spitting, but offered his life on the cross. He relied on his Father’s love.

What has God done in your past that you especially can look to as evidence of his presence with you?

No Confidence in the Flesh
“… I consider everything a loss compared to the surpassing greatness of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord, for whose sake I have lost all things. I consider them so much rubbish, that I may gain Christ and be found in him…”

How much merit would you assign to each “confidence in the flesh”: Good looks? Good works? Reputation? Religious traditions?
How can a person know he/she is “found in Christ?”

Woman Caught in Adultery
“The teachers of the law and the Pharisees brought in a woman caught in adultery… ‘Teacher, this woman was caught in the act of adultery. In the Law Moses commanded us to stone such women. Now what do you say?”

How does the way Jesus treated this woman help you face some of the sins you struggle with? Jesus accepts you “as is.” Does that free you to change, or does it reinforce your bad behavior? How so?

Our participation in Catholic Relief Services’ Operation Rice Bowl unites us in prayer, fasting, and giving with the millions of people throughout the world who are oppressed by poverty, injustice, war, disease, and lack of education and other opportunities.

Moses recounts great events of salvation history
“My father was a wandering Aramean, and he went down into Egypt with a few people and lived there and became a great nation, powerful and numerous…”
(Deuteronomy 26:5)
What were the Israelites confessing? Why? In what way should this confessing climax?
What confession would you make to accompany your giving?

“I will say of the Lord, ‘He is my refuge and my fortress, my God, in whom I trust.”
(Psalm 91:2)
What does it mean to make God your refuge?

“If you confess with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,’ and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.”
(Romans 10:9)
What is one major way your confession of Christ as Lord has influenced your life?
What are the stumbling blocks in your walk with God?

The Temptation of Jesus
“Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit, returned from the Jordan and was led by the Spirit in the desert, where for forty days he was tempted by the devil…”
(Luke 4:1)
If the devil had three “shots” at you, what three temptations would he use? How do these compare to Jesus’ temptations?
What can help you resist these appeals to self-interest, power, and spiritual pride?

Last Sunday February 14 “Troop Care Package Project”
The entire parish’s together with the members of the Mountain Bible Church, very good for Valentine’s Day we made the package; for the 460 gift’s package for own troop.

Patrick Dooling entitled “A Lent like no other…Returning to the Truth that Sets Us Free” Each Sunday we profess “We believe…” How does what we believe connect with our daily lives? “Cursed is the one who trusts in man, who depends on flesh for his strength and whose heart turns away from the Lord…
But blessed is the man who trusts in the Lord, whose confidence is in him…”
(Jeremiah 17: 5, 7)
What times of spiritual “drought” have you experienced? What keeps you going during those dry times?
How honest are you with yourself?
Could your heart be deceiving you about the motives of some of your actions at work?
 At home? In relationships?

Blessed are they who hope in the Lord!
(Psalm 1:1)
Where have you searched for happiness? Where do you find it?

The Resurrection of the Dead
“But if it is preached that Christ has been raised from the dead, how can some of you say that there is no resurrection of the dead?
(1 Corinthians 15: 12)
When did you connect the resurrection of Christ with your own victory over death?
What difference has that made to you in terms of hope and courage?
What new sense of purpose does this give you?
What arguments have you found helpful in showing unbelieving friends that Christ did rise from the dead?

Blessings and Woes
Looking at his disciples, he said:
“Blessed are you who are poor, for yours is the kingdom of God… But woe to you who are rich, for you have already received your comfort…”

FIFTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

February 7, 2010

Isaiah’s Commission
“I saw the Lord seated on a throne, high and exalted, and the train of his robe filled the temple. Above him were seraphs, each with six wings…”
What do you think might have been Isaiah’s initial response as the vision began to unfold? Awe, fear, guilt, or motivation.
“Woe to me!” I cried. “I am ruined! For I am a man of unclean lips, and I live among a people of unclean lips, and my eyes have seen the King, the Lord Almighty.”
(Isaiah 6: 1-2 5)
What did Isaiah mean when he said, “My lips are unclean and I live among a people of unclean lips”?
There is a problem with my speech; there is a problem with my heart; I’m just like the others; or God’s knows everything!

“In the sight of the angles I will sing your praises, Lord.”
(Psalm 138: 2)

“Now, brothers and sisters, I want to remind you of the gospel I preached to you, which you received and on which you have taken your stand… For what I received I passed on to you as a first importance: that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures, and that he appeared to Peter, and then to the Twelve…”
(1 Corinthians 15: 1, 3-4)
If you had to explain four facts of the gospel to an interested friend, what would you say? How would you counter those who “explain away” the resurrection naturalistically?
Where would you be now if not for God’s grace?

The Calling of the First Disciples
“Then Jesus said to Simon, ‘Don’t be afraid; from now on you will catch men.’ So they pulled their boats up on shore, left everything and followed him.”
(Luke 5: 10-11)
What is it going to take to get you going?
Time to consider the cost; a little support from others; a good kick in the pants; time to get myself together; help to clean up my life; or frankly, I don’t know.
